Santiago de Compostella.

The trip from Lugo to Santiago de Composte took us through some familiar towns from my walk last year. Passing through Melide we stopped to check out the oldest cross and a pulperia (octopus restaurant).

Arriving in Santiago we found we were booked in at an old convent on the outskirts of the old city. It's huge! It took me a couple of goes to get orientated....past the chapel, turn left at the picture of Mary, walk down the corridor of popes, go up the stairs at the Jesus on the cross (3-D) etc.

Some fond memories flooded back as we witnessed arriving pilgrims in the main square. A lot more young people and cyclists than on my walk, lots of groups and mostly Spanish. I guess this is because it's still Spanish summer holidays.

Revisiting the cathedral, the thingy thing that swings is still a hoot. We sat under its path and again it felt as though it could drop on top of us at any time.

Discovering new places. The two Maria's are local sisters who tried to liven up things during the civil war by dressing up, parading round the gardens and flirting with the young male students every day at two o'clock.  Their family was persecuted by the militia due to their brothers who were involved in the resistance. The woman became a symbol of resistance themselves and were well loved by the locals.

O,it is
Treats at the market.

Cathedral roof tour.

Looking inside at the altar from above.

There are always the nutters, seemed like more than last time trying to fund their travels through begging in the guise of being on a religious pilgrimage.

Mike at his favourite bar.

The local foot race, the kids race started at 9.45 p.m in the main plaza.
