El Puerte de Santa Maria and Cadiz

Our new home in El Puerte de Santa Maria is a lovely old family house, a perfect place to relax. We've had some great finds on Airbnb, this one included. Lots of space to spread out, kitchen and washing facilities and the lovely garden.

And the pomegranate tree is laden with sweet, juicy fruit.

El Puerte de Santa Maria is an old port town, some histories say that this is where Christopher Columbus left from on his voyages to discover the new world. There's a castle of course.

Sherry is the local drink, Helen enjoyed the 'seca' (dry), Mike and me the 'dulce' (sweet)

The beaches are quite nice and popular with the locals.

We took a day trip into Cadiz, a much larger port. The old town is sited on a small peninsula with forts on each side to protect the port from invaders.

The cathedral in the centre of town.

The, now disfunctional, spa baths between the two forts provides some nice shade on the beach.

Spied these little birds on the walkway out to the fort across the water.

I think this bird is a booby, it wasn't at all a scared of people allowing them to get up very close.

Heading back to the car around the edge of town.

Meanwhile, Mike had found the Roman Theatre which is in remarkable condition.

Plaza de Flores.

It seems we are on the Henry Moore sculpture trail, the same sculptures we saw in San Sebastián five weeks ago are here until November.
