Figueres, Cadaques and surrounds.

I'm We got our fix of Dali at the Teatre Museu Dali in Figueres this morning. Figueres is Dali's home town and it was in the foyer of the municipal theatre where he held his first exhibition. He's also buried here in the crypt. The theatre was mostly destroyed at the end of the Spanish Civil war so he decided to create his Museum on its ruins.
Top tip....book tickets online as the queue by the time we finished was way down the street.

The entrance foyer viewed from above.

That's Helen on the right.

I headed straight to the top to avoid the crowds, a manoeuvre that played out well as I had the top two floors to myself for most of my visit.

Bread and boobs are a reoccurring theme.

Below are the Dali jewels, fantastic creations using precious stones and lots of gold.

The whole building is decorated, this side with loaves of bread and eggs on top.

This one's for you Viv.

After a brief siesta to avoid the burning heat of the day we headed over the the gorgeous beachside village of Cadaques about 30 kms away. This time it was Helen's turn to get behind the wheel. Again it was a tough initiation to driving in Spain on a very narrow, winding and busy road to the coast. I think everyone from Barcelna is on the Costa Brava right now and it is easy to see why. Finding somewhere to park was another challenge and we headed out of the village towards Port Lligat.

Cadaques is just lovely. There are several small, sheltered pebbled coves that are lined with cafes, restaurants and boutique shops. Once again the beach was crowded as were most of the cafes. The surrounding village is a series of narrow laneways of whitewashed shops and accommodation. Very cute.

Making the most of the Dali effect.

You could easily think you were in Greece.

About 15 mins walk away is Port Ligat where you can visit Dali's holiday house which was very easy to pick out.

At the port of Port Lligat.

Heading back home we took the road north to el Portde la Selva, about 15 kms further up the coast.
Yet again another gorgeous holiday village. A much longer beach here and a bit less frenetic than Cadaques.

By then it was time to head home for our last night in Figueres. Thanks Mike for negotiating all those narrow laneways and easily misinterpreted directions on the GPS navigator. Tomorrow a trip down recent memory lane in San Sebastián, can't wait for the cheesecake.
